No Child Eats Alone – Friday, 2/9

Montlake Elementary Exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum

hall detailMontlake Elementary has its 3rd solo exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum during the month of February in the Community Corridor. In honor of Black History Month, students work pays tribute to African American artists, including Kehinde Wiley,Jacob Lawrence, Amy Shepard, Augusta Savage, Nick Cave, and Clementine Hunter. There are over 500 examples of paintings, textile arts, soft sculpture and clay on display from February 6-28.

Our school will be traveling down to SAM for a field trip on February 15. Students will enjoy an artist reception in the Arnold Board Room as well as tour the museums permanent collection and opening day beautiful new exhibit Revealing Perspectives.

Spelling Bee!

Montlake 1st through 5th Grade Parents:

Montlake will be holding a school spelling bee on Friday, March 9th. Each participating classroom will be holding a class spelling bee before March 2nd. The final three participants from each classroom will move to the school spelling bee. Two finalists from the school bee will move to the Regional Spelling Bee on March 25th.

A MAD PARTY Benefiting Montlake

This swanky evening includes a happy hour and games followed by a festive dinner, live auction and dancing. The proceeds of this celebration go towards funding valued programs such as art, P.E., greenhouse, music, counseling, and so much more.

Wine + Donuts!

Say Cheers to Montlake with a Donation to the Mad Party Wine Drive!

NEW this year to the Montlake Elementary Auction & Community Celebration is an all-school wine drive.

We are seeking donations of wine and bubbly to serve with dinner on March 17th. Donations will also be used for the Mystery Wine Wheel during the cocktail hour- for $25, guests takes home a bottle valued $30 to $49; and for $50, a guest takes home a bottle valued at $55 or higher.

This wine drive will allow us to shift funds raised from covering event costs to directly benefiting the school. Our goal is collect 150 bottles by March 9th, 2018. We need bottles valued at $20 or more and we would really LOVE bottles valued at $50 or more.

How can you help?

Bring a bottle (or two!) to school drop off on Thursday, March 1, and Friday, March 2, from 7:30-8:15 am along with a completed wine drive procurement form.

You don’t even need to get out of your car! Just drive up and your friendly Auction team will be happy to take your bottles off your hands in exchange for a delicious donut.

Collection stations will be located at the front of the school on 22nd Street and the north entrance on Calhoun Street March 1 and 2, 7:30-8:15am.

Opportunity: Auction Backroom!

Are you a detail oriented person? Do you love to optimize processes so they run smoothly and efficiently? Would you like to see how a large social event like the auction is managed from the inside?

Hi again, my name is still Greg Lindhorst. I have been driving the “backroom” operations for the annual auction for many years now. The whole process of preparing materials, data entry of bids, charging credit cards, and getting winners their spoils is my domain. But sadly this too hasn’t changed, this is my family’s last year at Montlake.

The PTA is looking for a volunteer to take on this role in the years to come. Ideally we would find someone to shadow me this year as we prepare for this March’s auction.

This role does not require a technical background. Although technology is used, such as Excel and Salesforce, it is as an end user of pre-packaged software. If you can work with a spreadsheet and enter data into a form then you are more than qualified. The most important skills required are being patient and flexible, especially the night of the auction.

Technology Vision Working Group

Are you interested in helping to keep our PTA running smoothly and efficiently? Do you have a technical background? Do you have an interest in learning more about cloud services such as Office 365, Microsoft Azure, and Salesforce, or working with open source software such as WordPress and OpenCart, on a platform of Linux, MySQL, and PHP?

Hi, my name is Greg Lindhorst. I have been driving the PTA’s technology efforts for many years now. In that time, we’ve moved to an electronic BuzzBook, classroom email distribution lists, online payments for most everything, and an online document repository for the PTA’s business. It is all built on free services and open source software – we don’t pay a dime. But alas, this is my family’s last year at Montlake.

The free software and services will continue without me. But we have benefited from my ability to create custom solutions and manage a Linux VM. We need to decide if this model is sustainable long term, if there is enough willing technical talent in our parent population to carry this forward. Given our employers include Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, and so many others, I have to believe there is a lot of talent out there.

We have three main options with lots of tradeoffs:

Full hosting. Manage our own VM and install/update software. This is what we do it today on Microsoft Azure. It is free, gives us the most flexibility for custom solutions, but requires the most technical manpower.
Shared hosting. Have someone else manage the VM and install/update software on our behalf. Examples include http://godaddy.com and http://a2hosting.com. These are a modest cost ($15-ish a month), with less technical manpower required (but still some), and a reasonable ability to customize.
Packaged services. Use someone else’s services for WordPress, eCommerce, etc. Examples include http://digitalpto.com/ and https://mailchimp.com/. These are the easiest for anyone to help with, but are the most expensive in dollars ($50-ish a month) and have limited customizations.

Do any of these words have any meaning for you? If so, great! We’re looking for you!

I’m starting a working group to consider these and any other options. I’m only asking for you to attend a meeting and engage on a few email threads just to discuss how we should move forward.
